Talmine to Strathy

Last night we stayed at a B&B in Talmine. It was owned and run by a couple who must be in their 80s. They originally came from around Aberdeen but then emigrated to Cairns in Australia. After working for local Government for a couple of years he spent 30 years in private practice there as an Architect. In 1991 they bought an old church in Talmine which had been converted into a house but then he designed and built an adjacent building with three suites in it that they called the Cloisters. I had a delicious kipper and scrambled egg for breakfast!

The forecast was for 20C but when you asked Bob what the forecast was he said "Look outside". His years of observation meant that the weather was always changing. It was cool to start with but sunny. We then had a warming southerly wind. Then towards the end of the days ride it was blowing hard from the north and we needed to put on extra warm clothes. We did 46 KM to-day. It was Saturday and there were many motorcyclists doing the North Coast 500. On one occasion we were overtaken by 9 motorcyclists. A group of about 50 bicyclists overtook us doing some sort of Fondo. We also met a solo cyclist cycling from Lands End to John o’Groats in sixteen days doing about 128 KM per day.

To-morrow we head towards Thurso but turn off just before the town to Scrabster where we get a ferry to the Orkney Islands.

Neil checking the map to ensure we had not taken a wrong turn.
