Thanks to friend Neil, with whom I have bicycled in Victoria, BC, during the last few winters an opportunity to spend nearly a month in Scotland bicycling has occurred. It involved giving up some other possible activities such as singing in Rachmaninoff's Vespers with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir. Neil lives in Toronto but spends five months each winter in Victoria. He has a sister whom we have known for more than 40 years who lives in Victoria. She put us in touch as we were keen cyclists. When in Victoria Neil and his wife Judy live in a condo close to where we live downtown Victoria. We have biked together most Saturdays when we are both in town. Neil's early education was in Scotland (he went to Gordonstoun school) and he wanted to go back to Scotland and do an extensive cycling tour. What he has organized is a 1000 KM route that will take us around the Scottish Highlands. It will take 26 days and will average about 45 KM per day. This means an average of about 2 1/2 hrs a day of bicycling. We have bought end of season rental bikes at a bike shop in Glasgow (cheaper than renting for a month).Gearbikes Glasgow . We will take a train to Oban, then a ferry to Barra on the Outer Hebrides. For the rest of the trip I plan to post Blogs to show our progress. I arrive in Glasgow on May 12th to start this adventure!
It is always fun to do a bit of research before setting off on a travelling trip. I have just re-read "How the Scots invented the Modern World : the true story of how Western Europe's poorest nation created our world & everything in it" by Arthur Herman.
Another useful book which I will carry on my IPad is "Lonely Plant Scotland's Highlands and Islands Travel Guide"
During this month Penny with Lucy (Daschund)has decided she wants to live in our Motorhome and so it is going to be parked at Oceanside RV on the Saanich Peninsular. See: Oceanside RV
